UK: Joy over softer line on cannibis
Wakefield Express
Friday 12 Jul 2002 A MULTIPLE sclerosis sufferer has applauded government plans to de- classify cannabis. Hayley Derrick, 33, of Lupset, said she was always fearful of being caught in possession and hauled through the courts for something that eased her pain. She said Home Secretary David Blunkett's decision to downgrade cannabis to a Class C drug and stop prosecuting small-time users was enlightened. The mum-of-two, who has suffered from MS for more than four years, said: "It is absolutely fabulous. For the past month I have not been able to walk and I have been stuck in a wheelchair. I do not know how I would be able to get on without cannabis. "When I have a smoke it lifts everything and stops it being a burden. I am really pleased." prosecuted three times for possession and felt it was a farce being dragged through the courts to be fined £150. But the decision was deemed "outrageous" by Kristine Smith, of drugs support group Gasped of Cheapside, Wakefield. She said: "You cannot say people who smoke cannabis will always move on to harder drugs but they are more likely to come into contact with those using heroin, cocaine and so on."
