UK: Expert Expresses Fears Over More Relaxed Cannabis Law
Press & Journal, Aberdeen
Monday 22 Jul 2002 THE country's leading cannabis researcher has "real concerns" about relaxing laws on the drug. Prof Roger Pertwee of Aberdeen University backs the use of cannabis in medicines - but he does not advocate recreational use of the substance. "I accept police time is wasted on cannabis but I am against it being decriminalised," he said. "An independent commission would be able to balance these different opinions." Prof Pertwee, secretary of the International Cannabis Research Society, added: "It is perfectly right to have a drug that is illegal for recreational use but legal for medical use. Look at heroin." He criticised the government for downgrading cannabis from category B to C, adding: "It is a highly carcinogenic drug when it is smoked." Drugs worker Janice Jess is also sceptical about liberalising the law. "We see cannabis as a gatekeeper drug and we don't think this is a wise decision," said Ms Jess, head of the Grampian Addiction Problems Service. "The Government has totally ignored people on the ground, like in Brixton, who say cannabis use has increased since a blind eye was turned to it."
