UK: Cannabis protest for Southsea
BBC News Online
Friday 09 Aug 2002 Southsea seafront plays host to the annual 'Smokey Bears' picnic' this weekend. The protest in favour of the legalisation of cannabis comes after the government re-classified the drug. Direct action campaigners, The Portsmouth Smokey Bears are set to stage their annual picnic on Southsea Common on Sunday. This is the nineth 'picnic' the group has held, as part of a non-violent civil disobedience to draw attention to the cannabis issue. Organsiers say they are keeping plans undercover but are expecting "some surprise guests to call in". Previous years's activities have included hemp weding and celebrity joint rolling contest. Last month Home Secretary David Blunkett reclassified cannabis as a less dangerous drug to free-up police resources to fight hard drugs such as heroin and cocaine. The Portsmouth group dismisses the Government's recent plans for the reclassification of cannabis as "confusing incoherant and contradictory". It says it would support government licenced-outlets with age limits where people could legally buy and smoke cannabis.
