UK: Police "split" over cannabis policy

Monday 16 Sep 2002 Senior police officers are divided over plans to introduce a "three strikes and you're out" policy on cannabis. The Police Superintendents' Association (PSA) said the proposal announced by the Association of Chief Police Officers earlier this month is an "unworkable fudge" which will confuse the public. Home Secretary David Blunkett plans to reclassify cannabis from a Class B drug to Class C, removing the police's power to arrest someone found with small amounts of the drug.
