UK: Legalise drugs to combat terrorism - Mowlam
Ananova
Thursday 19 Sep 2002 Mo Mowlam is urging the British and US governments to fight the war on terrorism by legalising the international drugs trade rather than "bombing civilians in Muslim countries". Legalising drugs would cut off funding for terrorists and stop their practices, according to the former Cabinet minister who used to have responsibility for drugs policy. Writing in The Guardian, she says: "It is clear that the present approach to drugs is not working, and if the war against drugs fails then we can be sure that the war against terrorism will also be unsuccessful." Legalising drugs would deprive international terrorists of finance and other resources, such as places for training, and money laundering facilities, Ms Mowlam said. The ex-Northern Ireland Secretary's remarks follow her call earlier this year for the Government to follow up its plans to downgrade cannabis by legalising all drugs in the UK. She said that "rather than bombing civilians in various Muslim countries, the United States and Britain (should) begin to take a more intelligent approach to the international drugs trade: namely, to legalise it internationally. "For by doing this, not only will we help solve one of the major problems facing the world today, the unregulated growth of drugs trafficking, but it would also further isolate the terrorists."
