UK: Judge issues warning to cannabis dealers

A senior judge has warned that the imminent reclassification of cannabis is
not a green light to dealers.

Judge Rodney McKinnon says he accepts a degree of "confusion" surrounds the
question of possession.

But he says those who make money out of what would remain an illegal drug
actually face tougher penalties.

He stated: "There may be different views about cannabis, but there are not
different views about supplying cannabis, and supplying drugs is a very
serious matter."

Jailing cannabis dealer Laurence Leo for six months at London's Southwark
Crown Court he continued: "People must recognise that supplying cannabis is
going to be treated by the courts as a very serious offence."

Earlier the court heard how the 27-year-old's illicit trade was uncovered
in March during a police swoop on his flat in Drury Lane, central London.

A pair of scales was found along with a carrier bag, which had been shoved
under a bedside table containing 41 separate wraps of herbal cannabis with
a street value of £385.

However, officers later estimated that Leo had already sold a thousand
pounds worth of the drug, which is shortly due to be downgraded from class
B to class C.

In a plea for leniency, Paul Walker, defending, asked the judge to bear in
mind the forthcoming change in the law in dealing with his client.

Judge McKinnon said: "It is significant, but the policy means that
sentences are to be increased as to dealing."
