UK: Cannabis Cafe Open Soon?
The Rhyl, Prestatyn and Abergele Journal
Saturday 28 Sep 2002 A CANNABIS cafe will open in Rhyl before the end of the year according to the man behind the scheme. Jeffrey Ditchfield, who has vowed to risk jail and open a Dutch-style cannabis coffee shop, said getting it up-and-running was "a lot more involved" than he anticipated, but it would still happen. He said: "We should have opened a few months ago, but things are now moving full steam ahead and we are still looking to open this year." North Wales Police Chief Constable Richard Brunstrom, who has called for a study into legalising drugs, has already warned that the law will be upheld and says if the cafe opens it will be shut down, but that has not deterred Mr Ditchfield. He said his coffee shop, for the over 18s, would sell cannabis for recreational use and supply it free to the genuinely ill with the proceeds donated to community projects in Rhyl. Mr Ditchfield, of Henllan, near Denbigh, said he had now joined Rhyl Crime and Disorder Group's drugs and alcohol focus group. He said: "I went along to a crime and disorder group public meeting because I felt I had something to contribute to the drugs debate and am now part of that focus group." Mr Ditchfield said he did not go to the meeting to cause trouble or to embarrass anyone, but because he believed it was an important issue. He said: "The meeting was very productive. There were even some areas of common ground and with my knowledge of drugs I believe I can make a valuable contribution."
