UK: T-shirt trouble for lawyer

Brighton & Hove Argus

Thursday 10 Oct 2002

---

A lawyer has run into trouble with prison governors by producing a T-
shirt for clients advocating the legalisation of cannabis.

Some inmates on remand at Lewes prison wanted to wear the shirts but
prison chiefs have banned them.

Criminal lawyer Ronnie Tremlett said the shirts, which say "A little
weed never did us any harm", were made as a promotional joke.

He said: "They are a bit of fun but I do support the decriminalisation
of cannabis."

Mr Tremlett ran foul of the authorities two years ago when he produced
another banned T-shirt which carried the words "I didn't do it! Nobody
saw me do it! You can't prove anything!"

A prison spokesman said at the time: "T-shirts often carry simple logos
but we would not allow anything that is not in the interests of good
order in the prison."

Mr Tremlett, who has offices in Grand Parade, Brighton, said the latest
shirts, which carry his name and phone number on the back, were a light-
hearted way of adverting.
