UK: Crop of cannabis 'for better health'
The Lancashire Evening Telegraph Friday 22 Nov 2002 A 53-YEAR-OLD man suffering from serious ailments turned to cannabis because of its medicinal qualities, a court was told. Blackburn magistrates heard that Ernest William Miller decided to grow his own in order to keep down the cost of his alternative treatment. Miller, of Fowler Height Close, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to cultivating 25 cannabis plants. He was given a 12 month conditional discharge, ordered to pay £65 costs. Magistrates also ordered the plants destroyed. Julie Reddish, prosecuting, said police raided an address in Foxstones Crescent, where Miller used to live, and found a cultivation system had been installed in two of the upstairs bedrooms. Miller, who was not present, surrendered himself at the police station the following day. Daniel King, defending, said Miller had suffered from very poor health for a number of years and included in his ailments were tuberculosis, bronchitis and septicaemia. "His condition has deteriorated significantly in recent years and for much of the time he is riddled with pain," said Mr King. "There have been recent pharmacological tests and cannabis has been hailed as an effective way of dealing with multiple sclerosis and a variety of other ailments. It may well be that within a few years cannabis will be available on prescription and hopefully my client will still be around to benefit from that." He said Miller had found that cannabis was therapeutic and had decided to grow his own.
