Md Ezam Borneo Bulletin
Friday 06 Dec 2002 Four Malaysian men are facing the death penalty after they were charged with possessing 990 grammes of cannabis. Sylvester Anak Kuling, Kok Kuang Meng, Lo Yuen Kim and Lam Meng Hwa first appeared in court last November 26. Yesterday, Senior Magistrate Hj Abdullah Soefri DSP Hj Abidin granted an application made by Deputy Public Prosecutor Hjh Anifa Rafiza to further remand them for further investigation. The four will be detained separately - Sylvester will be held at Sengkurong Police Station, Kok Kuang Meng and Lo Yuen Kim at Berakas Police Station and Lam Meng Hwa at the Central Police Station. DPP Hjh Anifa Rafiza, who was assisted by ANO Noryani, will bring up the case again on December 11. The four men were allegedly caught on November 24 - while they were inside a car in the vicinity of Bangunan Irama Aman, Tutong - in possession of a black plastic containing dried leaves weighing about 990 grammes and believed to be the Class B controlled drug, Cannabis, for the purpose of trafficking. The penalty is a maximum jail term of 30 years and 15 strokes of the cane for amounts not less than 400 grammes, while the minimum sentence is 20 years and 15 strokes for amounts not more than 600 grammes. However, as the four suspects were allegedly caught with drugs weighing more than 600 grammes, they face the death penalty.
