Malaysia: Lorry Driver Gets Death For Drug Trafficking
Bernama.com, Malaysia
Saturday 11 Jan 2003 IPOH, Jan 11 (Bernama) -- A lorry driver was today sentenced to death by the High Court here after he was found guilty of trafficking in 958gm of cannabis about three years ago. Ahmad Sabri Mat Isa, 30, from Lot 215, Kampung Tersusun, Jelapang Jaya here, committed the offence at the side of Polymasters Building, Lengkok Kledang, Silibin here at about 11pm on Nov 29, 1999. He was charged under Section 39B(1)a of the Dangerous Drugs Act which provides for the mandatory death on conviction. In passing sentence, Judicial Commissioner Su Geok Yiam said she had no choice but to impose the death penalty as it was the only sentence provided for by the law. The prosecution had proven its case and the defence had failed to raise any reasonable doubt on the prosecution, she said. In mitigation, the accused, through his lawyer Naran Singh, urged the court to impose a light sentence as he had a wife and a child to support. Naran said Ahmad Sabri was only 27 years old at the time of the offence and his young age caused him to be easily influenced by friends into such activities. The prosecution was conducted by DPP Abd Rahim Mohd Noor.
