UK: Cannabis stash seized at cafe

South London Press

Tuesday 21 Jan 2003

---

COPS netted a mass of cannabis in a swoop on a cafe with a reputation as
a haven for hash-smokers.

Three-and-a-half to four kilos of the drug was seized when officers
carried out a raid on the Green Leaf Cafe in Landor Road, Stockwell, at
around 5pm on Friday. They were there in response to concerns raised by
local residents.

Two other addresses - one in Brixton and one in central London - were
also searched as part of the operation.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Kaye, of Lambeth's drugs squad, said:
"This operation is the result of community consultation and concerns
raised by local residents about the activity in these properties.

"The activities were impinging on the quality of life of those people
living and working in the Landor Road area." He added that Lambeth
police would not tolerate drug dealing in the borough.

Six people - four men and two women - were arrested during Friday
afternoon's operation. The Green Leaf Cafe has been raided a number of
times in response to locals' concerns.

In April 1999, gunmen opened fire at a private party in the cafe.

Cops have pledged to tackle drug dealing in the Landor Road area and
recently introduced sniffer dog patrols in a bid to crack down on the
sale of illegal drugs.

Anyone with information about drug dealing is asked to call
Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
