Belgian cannabis law faces criticism

BRUSSELS - A parents' pressure group has criticised Belgium's new drugs
law, which lays the way open for young people to be prosecuted for
taking cannabis.

The new law allows the consumption of cannabis by adults under certain
circumstances but makes use by minors illegal.

The League of Families said legal action against minors who smoke
cannabis should be the exception rather than the rule because young
people experiment with drugs then stop using them spontaneously after a
while.

Youngsters should be counselled and guided, not prosecuted, said the
organisation.
