Belgian cannabis law faces criticism

Thursday 27 Feb 2003 BRUSSELS - A parents' pressure group has criticised Belgium's new drugs law, which lays the way open for young people to be prosecuted for taking cannabis. The new law allows the consumption of cannabis by adults under certain circumstances but makes use by minors illegal. The League of Families said legal action against minors who smoke cannabis should be the exception rather than the rule because young people experiment with drugs then stop using them spontaneously after a while. Youngsters should be counselled and guided, not prosecuted, said the organisation.
