UK: Man, 21, smoked drug to ease pain
Express & Star, Wolverhampton
Friday 28 Feb 2003 The survivor of a road traffic accident who smokes cannabis to ease his pain has been conditionally discharged by Wolverhampton magistrates for six months. Ranveer Kumar Adil, aged 21, of Fraser Street, Bilston, pleaded guilty to one count of possessing the Class B drug. He was yesterday also ordered to pay costs of £50 and advised to seek medical help. Miss Francoise Snape, prosecuting, said police officers found 14 wraps of cannabis, worth up to £70, in Adil's house last December. Adil, who walks with the aid of a stick, admitted to officers that he smoked the drug to ease his daily and constant pain, she added. Mr Frank Calleia, defending, said Adil had been hit by a passing vehicle around three years ago. The force of the collision had taken a chuck out if his right leg, leaving him disabled, in extreme pain and unable to sleep. Magistrate John Kenwrick said: "I must remind you that this is illegal and we are here to uphold the law. "I suggest you see your doctor and request some prescribed painkillers," he added.
