UK: Cannabis users still 'face jail'
Nottingham Evening Post
Friday 14 Mar 2003 Confused cannabis users are increasingly smoking in public, wrongly believing it is legal. But police today warned they are still breaking the law and risk being arrested. The confusion has been caused by Government plans to reclassify cannabis from a Class B to Class C drug. This happens in July and will make possession and use a less serious offence. But persistent offenders could still face two years in jail. Police say an increasing number of smokers are lighting up in pubs and on the streets of Nottingham. Clifton-based Sergeant Norman England said: "People now think it is fine to walk down the street smoking the drug or doing it in pubs." But he added that some users were pleading ignorance when they knew they were breaking the law. Police have started patrolling pubs to check for users and are using beer mats and posters to get the message across.
