Australia: Pain relief weed on the way

Herald Sun, Australia

Wednesday 16 Apr 2003

---

A CANNABIS-based pain reliever could be available in Australia as early
as next year.

A British company has applied for approval to launch the spray-on drug
in Britain.

The drug, Sativex, helps to alleviate pain and muscle spasms, and has
been treated so that users do not experience the "high" normally
associated with cannabis. Multiple sclerosis sufferers are among those
expected to benefit from the drug.

A GW Pharmaceuticals spokesman said it planned to apply for approval to
sell the drug in Australia and New Zealand if its application in Britain
were successful.

GW Pharmaceuticals is licensed to grow 40,000 cannabis plants at a
secret site in southern England.

It was given special permission to carry out clinical trials of Sativex,
which is sprayed under the tongue.
