UK: Cannabis accused: 'already a prisoner'
Scottish Socialist Voice
Wednesday 18 Jun 2003 An Orkney woman who lives with severe Multiple Sclerosis this week faces court over charges of cannabis possession, cultivation and supply. Biz Ivol's case is due to be heard on Wednesday in Kirkwall, after a police raid on her home nearly two years ago. She is accused of making cannabis chocolates and distributing them to other people with MS. Biz has told the press she intends to commit suicide after the court case, because of the pain she is in due to her MS, but will fight the charges all the way first, saying: "I'm not frightened about what might happen to me. They can't put me in jail because of the condition I'm in. They can't fine me anything because I haven't got any money. And I'm already a prisoner, trapped inside a body that's full of pain and doesn't work anymore." Meanwhile SSP member Colin Cameron, the first person in Scotland to be admonished for cannabis cultivation on the basis of medical need, has again been raided by police. They took 11 plants from his home last Friday. Colin, from Cupar, told the Voice: "I haven't been charged yet but if I am I will be up in front of the same sheriff, with the same mitigating circumstances, with no intent to supply. It's a total waste of police time." Colin, who uses cups of cannabis tea to ease the pain of sciatica, is asking SSP members to "raise a clamour of protest at the insane, heartless prosecution of Biz Ivol". "I know cannabis isn't everyone's cup of tea, so to speak, but the injustice of this must be evident to everyone."
