UK: Record levels of drug seizures
10 Downing Street Press Release
Tuesday 24 Jun 2003 Class A drug seizures have reached an all time high, preventing the most dangerous drugs reaching the streets, according to new figures published today. Home Office figures show that: * Class A drug seizures rose by ten per cent to 38,000. * Seizures involving cocaine rose by 16 per cent to 6,984. * Nearly 56 kg of 'crack' was recovered, more than double the amount in 2000. * Just under 4 tonnes of heroin was seized, a 16 per cent rise on 2000. * The number of dose/tablets of ecstasy-type drugs seized rose by 17 per cent to7.7 million. * The amounts of herbal cannabis seized (nearly 27 tonnes) and cannabis resin (59 tonnes) were the highest since 1997 and 1998 respectively. Home Office Minister Caroline Flint said: "I congratulate the police and customs for their successes in stopping more drugs reaching our streets. This is the result of more effective targeted action by enforcement agencies focusing on the most dangerous drugs. "I am particularly pleased that the drugs which do most harm to society, such as crack and heroin are being stopped in greater quantities. By preventing these drugs reaching the streets our law enforcement agencies are making a difference to the communities, families and individuals whose lives are blighted by drugs." Initiatives included Custom Officers targeting class A drug smugglers and local police increasing their efforts to get rid of street dealers and shut down premises that are used for dealing.
