UK: Cannabis grower spared jail
Ilford Recorder Thursday 26 Jun 2003 A BRICKLAYER who turned a friend's bedroom into a cannabis factory was spared jail after a judge accepted the 30 skunk plants were for personal use. James Da Silva, 32, of Grantham Gardens, Chadwell Heath, installed a sophisticated growing system in the roof to cultivate the super strong marijuana. When officers raided the flat in Stour Road, Dagenham, in February following a tip off, Da Silva led them to his makeshift factory. Fining him £500 at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Monday, Judge Alan Simmons ordered the drugs be destroyed. Piers Walker, prosecuting, told the court: "Police went to the address and found Mr Da Silva there with another man and noticed a strong smell of cannabis." Nicholas Wells, in mitigation, said the father-of-two only intended to grow the cannabis for his own use.
