UK: Drug code minister once took cannabis
The Times Friday 04 Jul 2003 THE Government minister responsible for drugs policy admitted yesterday that she had once smoked cannabis as a student. Caroline Flint, who was given the drugs portfolio in the Home Office two weeks ago, said she had sampled the drug more than 20 years ago. Ms Flint, the MP for Don Valley, said that the drug's illegal status acted as a brake on her trying it again. She said that she had not enjoyed the experience. The minister, who was educated at the University of East Anglia in Norwich and has a degree in American studies, has three teenage children. Ms Flint, 41, will oversee the policy of downgrading cannabis from a Class B to a Class C drug later this year. The downgrading will take place after the Criminal Justice Bill has become law and the penalty for trafficking in cannabis has been increased from five to 14 years. A Home Office spokesman said last night: "She was chosen because she is the best person for the job. Everyone has full confidence in her. She gave an honest answer to a straight question."
