LEGALIZE POT, SENATE COMMITTEE SAYS

OTTAWA - A Senate committee said in a report Wednesday that marijuana
should be legalized.

The Special Committee on Illegal Drugs released its final report on
Wednesday morning, in which it says the public drug policy should be of a
guiding nature, rather than a restrictive one.

The committee also says the government should wipe clean the records of
anyone convicted of marijuana possession.

"In many ways prohibition is a cop-out," said Senator Pierre Claude Nolin,
chair of the committee.

Nolin said cannabis is less harmful than alcohol.

Senator Colin Kenny said no one on the committee wants to see an increase
in drug use.
