CN SN: Pot May Be On At 'Toon Cafe
ccguide Thursday 09 Jan 2003 Pubdate: Thu, 09 Jan 2003 Source: Calgary Sun, The (CN AB) Copyright: 2003 The Calgary Sun Contact: Website: http://www.fyicalgary.com/calsun.shtml Details: http://www.mapinc.org/media/67 Author: Canadian Press POT MAY BE ON AT 'TOON CAFE SASKATOON -- Uncertainty over Canada's marijuana laws likely sparked a proposal to set up in Saskatoon a Dutch-style cafe where small amounts of marijuana can be consumed, says the city's mayor. Jim Maddin says the city's planning and zoning department has received a letter from a person interested in the idea if Canada's marijuana laws change. "I think what has prompted this is the recent discussion at the federal level with respect to cannabis possession and that sort of thing," Maddin said yesterday. "The letter contains reference to the fact that there are a great number of users of cannabis throughout Canada and certainly here in Saskatoon, and a lot of these people have been sheltering that activity because of course it's a criminal offence." Details of the Saskatoon proposal aren't known. In Holland, more than 800 licenced cannabis cafes have been set up where marijuana users can buy and smoke small amounts of pot. - --- MAP posted-by: Beth
