UK: MPs Warned of Cannabis Link to Mental Illness Pippa Crerar PA News Thursday 23 Oct 2003 Levels of mental illness could rise 'dramatically'in the UK if use of cannabis in its current form increases, the Commons was told today. Tory Graham Brady (Altrincham and Sale W) said it was 'vital' MPs were aware of all the facts before next week's debate on reclassification of the drug. He warned there was a 'real danger'that they could address the issue with 'out-of-date and inappropriate' knowledge. During exchanges on coming parliamentary business, Mr Brady warned: 'There is a real danger that a number of Members, particularly of a certain age, will address this question with knowledge or experience which is out of date and inappropriate. 'It is important that the House should know that the cannabis which is available today is 10 or 15 times stronger than that which was freely available in the 1960s, that it leads to a four-fold increase in the danger of serious depression or schizophrenia. 'And there has been evidence put forward that suggests that levels of mental illness will rise dramatically in this country if use of cannabis in its current forms is to increase.' Commons Leader Peter Hain praised Mr Brady for making his points 'very eloquently'.
