UK: Drug dealers will tighten their control

Conservatives.com

Tuesday 28 Oct 2003

---

Oliver Letwin has called on MPs to fight controversial Government plans to
liberalise the drugs laws by downgrading cannabis from a Class B to a Class
C drug.

On the eve of a House of Commons debate on moves to declassify the drug,
the Shadow Home Secretary staged a media briefing at Westminster, and said:
"We are opposed to this measure, which will send out mixed signals to
parents and children around the country.

"On the one hand, people who use cannabis will not be prosecuted -
suggesting that taking cannabis is acceptable. On the other hand, people
selling cannabis will be prosecuted for up to 10 years, suggesting cannabis
is unacceptable. This is leaving people across Britain totally confused."

Mr Letwin told conservatives.com: "The reclassification of cannabis is the
worst of both worlds. There is a case for legalisation, and there is a case
for getting people off drugs. What there is not a case for is making them
semi-legal. This will give control over cannabis to the drugs dealers not
the police."
