UK: Cannabis reclassification is generally welcomed
Abergele Visitor ic NorthWales
Wednesday 12 Nov 2003 PLANS to reclassify cannabis in the New Year have been welcomed in the area. MPs in the House of Commons have approved proposals by Home Secretary David Blunkett to reclassify cannabis as a Class C drug despite claims by Conservatives that it will lead more young people to try harder drugs. Mr Blunkett argued the change will allow police to spend more time tackling Class A drugs such as heroin. Cannabis will now be ranked in the category that includes bodybuilding steroids and some anti-depressants. Possession will no longer be an arrestable offence in most cases, although police will still have the power to arrest users in certain circumstances, such as when the drug is being smoked near schools. The move was welcomed by Clwyd West MP Gareth Thomas who feels it offers an effective and realistic approach to dealing with the problem of drug abuse. "Reclassifying cannabis will mean the police are able to concentrate their resources on tackling drugs like cocaine and heroin which cause considerable harm to communities," he added. "It is worth pointing out the use of cannabis is still illegal and will remain illegal when the new act is brought about in the New Year." Jeff Ditchfield, owner of the Beggar's Belief shop, Rhyl, which sells cannabis paraphernalia, partly welcomed the move. "But it's not enough as what we really need is to look into all issues surrounding drugs," he said. "However, if it does allow the police to concentrate on other crimes or dealing with stronger drugs then it's a good move."
