UK: Twist and Ban
Karen Bale Daily Record, Glasgow
Wednesday 19 Nov 2003 Ad rap for Rizla AN ADVERT for Rizla cigarette papers has been banned because it shows a packet twisted at the end like a cannabis joint. Watchdogs said the ad was likely to be seen as a reference to cannabis use and ``condoning consumption of illegal drugs''. The advert also shows the words ``Twist and Burn'', and underneath, the slogan, ``Rizla. It's What You Make Of It''. The Advertising Standards Authority claimed ``twist`` was another word for a joint and ``burn''was slang for smoking it. But Rizla who were shopped over the ad by a rival company insist that Twist and Burn refers to motorbike riding and only a ``minority'' of customers use their papers to make reefers. They told the ASA: ``The connotation suggested could be reached only by someone energetically searching for drug-culture references.'' Rizla, who have always denied their main market is cannabis smokers, said there were 5.6 million adults who rolled their own legal cigarettes.
