Ireland: Farmer Begins Appeal Against Cannabis Charge

Tuesday 02 Dec 2003 A LOCAL farmer began his appeal in Ballyhoo District Court yesterday against a fine for feeding his cattle a controlled substance. Laurence Patrick Furlong had admitted in court on October 18th last that he had bought the controlled substance in the form of hemp ropes, and had fed them to his cattle. His solicitor, Ms Dymphna Snagge, told the court yesterday that he would be appealing both the severity of his sentence and the 30 euro fine. What was at stake, she said, was not only Mr Furlong's liberty but also his good name in the community, having a suspended sentence hanging over his head, and the principle of paying a fine, however small. Judge Oscar Nugent (presiding) was told that the court hear 'major' new evidence that had come to light, and Ms Snagge said that it was 'a matter of grave urgency' that Judge Nugent take account of the testimony of a private investigator, one Robert O'Shea, so that justice could be seen to be done.
