Australia: Hemp the crop of farmers' future

Friday 05 Dec 2003 (Presenter: Greg Hayes Researcher: Vanessa Mills ) Lucrative & legal cash crop for farmers The West Australian Government is poised to legalise the cultivation of industrial hemp. This is not the stuff you can smoke - it has no effect as a drug and is instead made into clothing, textiles, culinary oil, paper & even biodegradable plastic. It is touted as being a green alternative to cotton or timber. Currently, industrial hemp can only be grown in WA under strict conditions, which has restricted the burgeoning market and producers have to import it from overseas growers. Legislation has recently been introduced to allow hemp to be cultivated and already farmers around the state are considering diversifying into the lucrative crop. A crop of hemp can yeild $3000 per hectare. Kim Hough is the President of the Hemp Association of WA. He says theres potential for growing industrial hemp in Kununurra's Ord Valley.
