Morocco: 20 tonnes of drug seized in Morocco

Tuesday 09 Dec 2003 TANGIERS, Morocco - Moroccan police have made a record haul of cannabis resin in the northern port of Tangiers, media reports said on Tuesday. Nearly 20 tonnes of the drug which was uncovered on Sunday, hidden in a lorry packed with tomatoes, according to Moroccan news agency MAP. The haul surpasses the total amount of drugs seized in the city in the whole of 2003. The driver of the lorry was arrested along with three other men, described by MAP as an intermediary and two guards of a Tangiers factory where the drugs had been loaded onto the lorry. Police seized the lorry, which had French number plates, and various items of equipment discovered in the factory. Tangiers is a popular turntable for Moroccan drugs on their way to Europe. Between January and November 2003 about 130 Moroccans and 108 foreigners have been arrested in connection with drugs offences, according to police. Last month just over 6 tonnes of cannabis was discovered, also hidden in a lorry among a load of tomatoes destined for Spain.
