UK: Police weed out suspected net traffickers
Claire Woffenden Web-user.co.uk
Monday 22 Dec 2003 Three people have been arrested on suspicion of selling cannabis over the internet, according to the UK's National Hi-Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU). A 37-year old man and a 33-year old woman, both from Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire, and a 35-year old man from Brighton are being interviewed by police. The trio were arrested following a operation coordinated by the NHTCU and officers from Hertfordshire Constabulary and Sussex Police. According to the NHTCU, the men and woman are suspected of running password-protected websites that are accessed by customers who place their orders for drugs which are then dispatched by post. It is suspected that close to half a million pounds have passed through the suspects' bank accounts which have now been frozen. The websites have now been shut down. Sussex Detective Inspector Glen Jones said: "Today's operation is the culmination of several months of investigation into the selling of drugs over the internet. We in Sussex have worked closely with Hertfordshire and the National Hi-Tech Crime Unit in obtaining evidence relating to a sophisticated drug trafficking network." The National Hi-Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU), which launched in April 2001, is the UK's first national law enforcement organisation tasked to combat computer based serious and organised crime.
