UK: Drug swoop in street
Crime Reporter Greg Truscott South London Press
Tuesday 23 Dec 2003 MORE than 180 police officers swooped on a street infamous as a haunt for cannabis dealing. Cops descended on Landor Road, Stockwell, at around 9pm on Friday, sealing off the street and arresting 15 suspected drug dealers. The massive operation, which involved the Territorial Support Group, dog teams, a police helicopter and undercover officers, took place after previous efforts failed to solve the problem. Lambeth Borough Commander Dick Quinn said the demand for cannabis was driven by "drug tourism" as people came into the area to score the drug. Chief Superintendent Quinn said: "The drug dealing has caused much community concern. "Residents feel intimidated by the antisocial behaviour, thereby causing a fear of crime. There is also evidence it is increasing the number of robberies in the area. "The people who come here to buy and sell cannabis are not residents and they would be the first to complain if the cannabis dealing was taking place on their doorstep." Chief Supt Quinn added that officers would arrest people found with even small amounts of cannabis in Landor Road in the coming weeks in a bid to end drug dealing in the street. He said his officers would seek antisocial behaviour orders against drug dealers through the courts. Of the 15 people arrested, six have been charged with drug offences, five were cautioned for possession offences, two have been bailed to return to a police station and two were released with no further action. 020 8710 6435 email: crime@slp.co.uk
