UK: Arrests over internet drug trade allegations

Tuesday 23 Dec 2003 Meanwhile a couple from Wheathampstead have been arrested on suspicion of selling cannabis over the internet. A man aged 37 and a woman aged 33 were arrested on Monday morning by officers from Hertfordshire Police and the National Hi-Tech Crime Unit (NHTCU). The arrests followed searches at two addresses in Wheathampstead and St Albans. A 35-year-old Brighton man was also arrested for conspiracy to supply drugs. The operation was jointly run by Herts Police and Sussex Police in conjunction with NHTCU. Monday's raids followed an eight-month investigation into a nationwide drug-dealing system with cannabis being sold on the internet through a password-protected web site. The trading was brought to the attention of police by several financial institutions which were concerned by the large volume of transactions going through personal bank accounts. Amazed A small team of officers from Herts began investigating and it is now alleged that people al over the UK were accessing the web site and purchasing cannabis. Investigating officer Matt Cornish said: "We believe that this is the first case of its kind in the country and all our investigating team have been amazed at the activity that this website has had and the quantity of orders placed via the internet. In addition to those arrested, the details of those who purchased drugs over the internet have been recorded and investigations are continuing in relation to all of them.
