UK: Tories vow to reverse drug law
The Times Monday 29 Dec 2003 The Government's decision to downgrade the classification of cannabis would be reversed by the Conservatives as part of their strategy to tackle gun crime. A softer approach to cannabis means that more youngsters experiment with harder drugs, David Davis, the Shadow Home Secretary, said yesterday. David Blunkett, the Home Secretary, downgraded cannabis from a Class B to Class C drug two years ago. 'Half of new crime is drug-related,' Mr Davis told The Mail on Sunday. 'Speaking as a parent, I find the Government's mixed messages on drugs appalling.'
