UK: 'Marijuana within a couple of months'
Evening Express, Aberdeen Saturday 10 Jan 2004 The window display at Cannagro promises a feast of home-grown fruit and veg. Colourful pamphlets feature pictures of tomatoes, peppers and melons near to bursting with ripeness. Inside, the shop is aglow with halogen bulbs casting light on the first sproutings of strawberry seedlings in plastic troughs. Most reasonable observers would conclude - correctly - that Cannagro is a shop trading in hi-tech equipment for indoor plant growing. But when I visited Cannagro I discovered many customers are not only interested in growing strawberries and tomatoes. I struck up a conversation with the owner about the types of equipment and products he deals in. I confessed to knowing little about gardening or plant growing but he explained the processes of growing hydroponically and organically, in layman's detail. But, I suggested, given the name of the shop, he surely must know of some customers who planned to use the equipment for growing cannabis plants. He smiled and said yes, he did. He revealed that he also sells cannabis seeds, sometimes ordering on demand. He went to a small water cooler behind his desk and returned to the counter where he spread out half a dozen small see-through plastic bags. Each contained about 10 tiny seeds which, if cultivated properly he claimed could yield a harvestable crop of marijuana within a couple of months. But he stressed that simply selling these seeds is perfectly legal, so long as he tells customers it is illegal to grow them into plants. At the moment he offers a verbal disclaimer but plans to put a sign up. There is no cannabis paraphernalia on show. Any cannabis-related items - such as guidebooks on growing and lifestyle magazines - are kept apart from regular stock. Cannagro's owner said he does not want to risk alienating regular, mainstream customers.
