UK: Cannabis plans opposed
BBC Online
Wednesday 14 Jan 2004 Guernsey politicians are being urged to reject the proposed reclassification of cannabis. The Board of Health intends to go to the States next month for agreement on the downgrading of the drug from Class B to Class C, making possession a less serious offence, in line with the UK. But Paul Elliott, chairman of the Guernsey Crime Prevention Panel, is strongly against such a move and says islanders should be lobbying deputies to oppose it. He said: "They have taken this line in the UK and they have done that because police and customs in the UK cannot cope with the volume of cannabis offences. "So they remove the offence so they cannot be criticised. "But we don't need to do that in Guernsey because the customs and police do have the capacity and the resources to control the problem." He said most of the burglars in the island were funding their drug habit. "If cannabis becomes less risky to bring into the island then dealers will bring greater volumes of all drugs in. "It is a slippery slope to disaster."
