UK: Cannabis grower is jailed after raid

A STARK warning has gone out to cannabis cultivators in Halton after a man
was jailed for 21 months.

Halton's Dedicated Drugs Team has enjoyed another successful prosecution -
after discovering a purpose-built unit designed to grow more than £48,000
worth of the drug at RAS, Percival Lane, Runcorn.

Last month 35-year-old Vincent Adamson from Hallwood Park pleaded guilty at
Warrington Crown Court to a number of charges including possession with
intent to supply cannabis, cultivation of cannabis and abstracting electricity.

The case followed a swoop on Adamson's car repair yard in September last
year by officers from the pro-active unit, who searched two large metal
containers at the address which, on closer examination, housed an
operational hydroponics unit with cannabis plants of varying maturity.

Officers were then shocked to discover that the drug farm was being powered
by electricity from the nearby railway supply which had been illegally
tapped into.

In total, 389 cannabis plants were seized - with experts estimating the
yield could have netted Adamson around £48,000 if sold on the street.

While at the yard, officers also discovered a partly dismantled stolen
Porsche Boxster and parts from a Peugeot car recently stolen from Widnes.

Adamson was arrested on suspicion of theft and cultivation of cannabis.

When interviewed by the Dedicated Drugs Team, he admitted he had helped two
unnamed men build the unit then allowed them access to it daily, and that
he was paid £150 per week for doing so.

He was subsequently charged with numerous offences including possession
with intent to supply cannabis, cultivation of cannabis and abstracting
electricity.

On December 19 he pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 21
months behind bars.

Welcoming the sentence, DS Simon Owen, of the Halton Dedicated Drugs Team,
said: 'This man chose to commit an array of criminal offences rather than
concentrating on running an honest business.

'I would use this case as a warning to anyone who is contemplating
producing controlled drugs as a commercial venture - there is every chance
you will be discovered and prosecuted.

'At best this will cost you your livelihood, and at worse your liberty.'
