UK: Farmer grew cannabis 'to relieve depression' Raymond Shewan Press & Journal, Aberdeen Friday 16 Jan 2004 A Tenant farmer was found growing cannabis which he mixed with ice cream and took as an alternative to prescription drugs, Elgin Sheriff Court heard yesterday. Police with a search warrant found a cannabis cultivation operation when they raided Michael Geddes's home at Lochside Farm on the outskirts of Elgin. They seized 15 plants bearing 460g of cannabis which, it was estimated, would have had a street value of about £1,000. But the court was told that Geddes was not involved in supplying and had grown the cannabis rather than allow a dealer to profit from him. Defence solicitor Tom Cruickshank said Geddes, 45, had had ill-health, including migraines and depression, for a number of years but had suffered side effects from the various medicines he had been prescribed. "The position is that he became aware that there was a view that cannabis could control his symptoms without side effects," said Mr Cruickshank . He told the court that Geddes was very strict about not smoking cannabis and instead mixed it with ice cream. Mr Cruickshank said Geddes had been cultivating the cannabis plants for about a year before the police turned up at his home on October 10, 2002. "He himself gave the police the information about the period over which he had been doing this and it had taken all that time, about a year, to get the cultivation to the stage it was at. He had hardly got it to the stage where the various products were usable." Mr Cruickshank said Geddes was determined not to allow any drug dealer to benefit from his use of cannabis and he had decided to grow it himself. "It is a rather unusual case in that Mr Geddes comes before the court with no previous convictions," said Mr Cruickshank. "He has no intention of carrying out any further experiments and has gone back on to prescription drugs." Geddes was fined £800 after he admitted being concerned in the production of a controlled drug by cultivating plants. --=======620C58AE=======--
