UK: Tories would reverse cannabis reclassification
Ananova
Thursday 22 Jan 2004 Michael Howard says a future Conservative government would reverse Labour's downgrading of cannabis from Class B to Class C. The Tory leader also denounced the reclassification as "absurd". His intervention comes a week ahead of the change to Class C which will mean police will rarely make arrests for possession of small amounts. Doctors have voiced concern over the reclassification. Home Secretary David Blunkett today admitted he had "agonised" over the move and expected to "take a bit of stick" over it but insisted he would not back down. Mr Howard told The Independent: "After thinking about this very carefully, we have come to the view that the Government's decision is misconceived and when we return to office, we will reclassify cannabis back to Class B."
