UK: 51% want laws on dope relaxed
Bob Roberts The Mirror
Tuesday 27 Jan 2004 MORE than half the public want the sale and possession of cannabis decriminalised or even legalised, a poll revealed yesterday. It found 28 per cent favour decriminalisation - making it a minor offence like parking on double yellow lines - while 23 per cent want full legalisation. Fifty-two per cent applaud the move to downgrade cannabis from a Class B to Class C drug. Only 43 per cent believe selling or possessing it should remain a crime. The survey found that 44 per cent think dope is "seriously addictive" while 75 per cent think the same about alcohol. Fewer than 10 per cent of the 2,536 adults questioned by YouGov want to see any change to thelaws on hard drugs.
