UK: Cops warn Scots on cannabis
Evening Times, Glasgow
Thursday 29 Jan 2004 SCOTS found in possession of cannabis were today told by police they would still be arrested. The warning came on the day the drug was downgraded from Class B to Class C. Police forces in England and Wales are to relax their powers of arrest, but Strathclyde Police today insisted anyone caught with cannabis would still be charged with being in possession of an illegal drug. A senior officer warned: "There is no change in the way we police cannabis. Perhaps some people will have a problem with that, but declassification doesn't make it legal." The tough stand is backed by Government Ministers in Scotland but MSP Tommy Sheridan today called on the police to turn a blind eye to the use of cannabis. The Scottish Socialist Party leader said: "This law is a mess. Cannabis, like alcohol, is not a harmless drug but those who consume it are no more criminals than those who are devoted to jigsaws." The change in classification is also likely to lead to an angry confrontation between police and supporters who want to open Scotland's first cannabis cafe in Leith, near Edinburgh. Police say they will swiftly act if the law is flouted.
