UK: Deputy against drug move
BBC Online
Sunday 08 Feb 2004 A member of Guernsey's Board of Health says he believes reclassifying cannabis makes a nonsense of the island's UKP500,000 drugs strategy. Deputy Francis Quinn will be opposing the proposal which comes up before the States this month. Deputy Quinn will be voting against his committee on reclassifying cannabis from Class B to Class C. He believes there is no need to do it now and is urging the Board to wait and watch the UK experiment. Public perception He says reclassifying the drug is unnecessary and it sends out confusing messages to young people and parents. The Board of Health is pushing for the change, claiming it will bring the drug more in line with public perception. The proposals, if approved, would see the penalties for the possession of a Class C drug drop from a maximum of four years to two. It would also see the penalties for production, supplying and offering to supply increase from 10 to 14 years. The combination of the reclassification of cannabis and the changes to the law would mean the maximum sentence for possession decreases from 10 to two years.
