US: US Marshals Bust High Priest Of Pot
Mike Zigler Las Vegas City Life
Wednesday 03 Mar 2004 It was only a matter of time. Pierre Werner was finally charged for his role as a medical marijuana provider. Late last month, Metro issued a warrant for Werner's arrest, and a U.S. Marshals task force detained him Feb. 24. Fidencio Rivera, chief of Nevada U.S. Marshals, said Werner was on his way to attain a business license from the county to sell marijuana when he was arrested. He was charged with possession with intent to distribute. On Jan. 17, police raided Werner's house after several neighbors reported that he was waving around a marijuana plant in the early morning hours. Detectives seized marijuana, paraphernalia used to grow pot and plastic baggies -- but no charges were formerly issued at the time. Werner said shortly after the Jan. 17 incident that police likely confiscated 20 to 30 plants. Werner is a patient in the Department of Agriculture's medical marijuana program. He is allowed to have up to seven plants, but has pushed the limits of the law. He argues that the state recognizes medical marijuana, but doesn't provide a safe place for patients to purchase it. Don Henderson, director of the Department of Agriculture in Reno, said his offices are always interested in people who can inform the public on the specifics and advantages of the program. However, they don't want people who don't follow the law educating. The Department of Agriculture has not had any problems with federal law enforcement, Henderson said. However, Werner is not the first patient to get into trouble. "For a variety of reasons, we've had a few patients with problems with the local law enforcement agencies for not following the guidelines," Henderson said. Werner posted a $10,000 bail and has a March 25 court date.
