UK: Tories pledge to reverse cannabis move

Jamie Lyons, PA News

---
Labour's "foolish" reclassification of cannabis would be immediately
reversed by a Tory government, shadow home secretary David Davis said today.

Mr Davis said the Government's move had wrongly persuaded people cannabis
was safe and legal. And he underlined the Tories' pledge to change it back.

"We have opposed this lunacy and we will reverse it," he said.

Speaking at the Conservatives' spring conference in Harrogate Mr Davis said
it would be his first move as Home Secretary.

The Government had a responsibility to stop youngsters starting on "the
path to self-destruction". And it had a duty to stop those hell-bent on
self-destruction from ruining other people lives.

Mr Davis said drug-related crime cost the country UKP25 billion a year -
more than the Government spent on education.

Under a Tory government drug addicts would be given a simple choice,
residential treatment or the criminal justice system.

For those under 18 the slate would be wiped clean when they finished their
treatment.

He added: "Some people say we've lost the war on drugs. But Labour haven't
even begun to fight it. They have capitulated. Our country deserves better."
