UK: Teens crave old fashioned values
Reuters
Tuesday 09 Mar 2004 LONDON (Reuters) - Teenagers are not as rebellious as previously thought, believing in traditional values such as marriage and disagreeing with the possible legalisation of cannabis, a survey says. Bliss magazine asked 5,000 young people with an average age of 15 to take part in the survey which looked into the social and political attitudes of teenagers. The average age young people want to get married is 24, the survey said, with 92 percent saying they believed in marriage and hoped to marry one day. Seven out of ten teenagers think cannabis should not be legalised in Britain, even though 23 percent said they had taken drugs. Over two-thirds surveyed by the popular teen magazine also said harsher punishments would stop young people committing crimes, with 84 percent believing adult sentences are too soft and two-fifths wanting the return of the death penalty. "This survey is a damning indictment of the damage caused by the lax attitudes of adults inflicted on children," said Bliss editor Helen Johnston. "Young people like tradition and have passionate beliefs about the society they want to live in. They want a society they can trust." The survey also showed a strong sense of patriotism with 86 percent saying they were proud to be British and over two thirds worried about further European integration, while 87 percent do not want the euro currency. Prime Minister Tony Blair and Prince Charles come in for criticism, with 82 percent saying they do not trust Blair and three-quarters against the war in Iraq, while 70 percent think Charles will make a bad King. Yet two-thirds said they prefer the Royal Family and parliament to a possible presidential system. But the teenagers returned to form when asked about the best television presenter and their favourite royals. They chose TV duo Ant and Dec and their fourth favourite royal was the Queen's corgis.
