UK: 'Cannabis cafe' owner is jailed
BBC Online Tuesday 30 Mar 2004 A man who made UKP620,600 from selling cannabis at his Brixton eatery has been jailed for six-and-a-half years. Errol Anderson, 47, of Streatham, south London, had been convicted of money laundering and cannabis possession. He was also sentenced at Inner London Crown Court for allowing illegal trade at the Green Leaf cafe in south London. His wife, Audriana Witter, 49, was jailed for two-and-a-half years after being convicted of money laundering as well. They were convicted last week, when the court heard Anderson had bought 14 properties with the money he had made from his illegal drugs trading. Mobile food stall He purchased the properties as a way of investing the money without drawing attention to it. Customers who visited Anderson's Landor Road shop were able to buy patties at the counter before going to a back room to buy marijuana. He also sold the drug from his mobile food stall at various festivals. A profit Mr Anderson had made of UKP100,000 "could not possibly be accounted for by the sale of jerk chicken and patties", the prosecution had said. Cannabis deal Officers found 700 packages of the drug when they raided the cafe and receipts for more than 28,000 packets of cigarette papers. Anderson, who was not at the cafe at the time of the raid, was arrested and after being released on bail made a further UKP233,000 from dealing the drug, the court heard. He was then detained a second time when he was caught red-handed at one of his properties in a 2.5kg cannabis deal. Both defendants claimed the drug dealing had taken place at their cafe without their knowledge. Anderson was convicted on 10 counts of money laundering and three of possessing cannabis with intent to supply. Witter was convicted of seven counts of money laundering the proceeds of drugs trafficking. The amount involved was UKP390,190.
