UK: 'Cannabis' lollies fury

Manchester Online

---

TEACHERS have slammed the sale of "cannabis" lollies near their school,
saying they could glamorise drug-taking.

The green-coloured 50p sweets are being sold at a Texaco garage in
Rochdale, just yards from St Cuthbert's High School.

Owners of the garage shop say the lollies, which are labelled as containing
hemp extract, do not contain drugs and are not sold to under-18s.

But John Wood, head of the school in Oldham Road, said: "I'm extremely
concerned that a product with this title is being made available to the public.

"In schools we do all we can to warn children of the dangers around drugs.
A product like this will only serve to glamorise a social problem."

Concerned

Trading standards officers in West Yorkshire tested the "cannabis" lollies
following complaints when they went on sale in Leeds. They found no trace
of the ingredient responsible for the "high" associated with cannabis.

The lollies, which come in tubs with a cannabis leaf motif, are thought to
have been made in Germany and sold in Britain by wholesalers in London and
Bradford.

A Texaco spokesman said the company was concerned about the sale of the
lollies at the garage, which is independently owned.

Mash Allen, a buyer for Select, which supplies the lollies, said: "The
people who buy cannabis lollies are cool, trendy people. We sell a lot to
bars and clubs and people are fine with it.

"Parents should not be worried because our market is not children.''
