UK: Jail term for cannabis cafe boss

Nino Williams

---

The man who made hundreds of thousands of pounds by selling cannabis from a
cafe in north Clapham has been sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison.

Errol Anderson, of Ribblesdale Road, Streatham, was found guilty on 10
counts of concealing or transferring UKP620,600 proceeds of drugs
trafficking, at Inner London Crown Court two weeks ago.

He was also found guilty on three counts of possessing a class B drug with
intent to supply.

Anderson was arrested after police began an investigation into suspected
drug dealing from his cafe, the Green Leaf in Landor Road, in September 2002.

During the six-month trial the court was told customers would enter the
shop ostensibly to buy food, but would then be ushered down a side corridor
where they could choose from a selection of cannabis.

The shop would always have a supply of cannabis in prepared deal bags,
allowing customers to complete their business and leave the premises within
seconds.

The cafe built a reputation by word-of-mouth, and increasing numbers of
people would travel to the area to buy the drug, disturbing the quality of
life for local residents.

When police eventually raided the premises in April 2002 they discovered
more than 2kg of the drug on the premises and Anderson was arrested.

However, even when he was released on bail, police discovered he continued
to deal.

Anderson's wife Audrianna Witter was also convicted on seven counts of
transferring the proceeds of drugs trafficking, totalling UKP390,000.

The Met's financial investigation south service were called in to determine
the extent of the criminal benefit from drug trafficking and to identify
any assets that may be confiscated following his conviction.

Their inquiries into Anderson and Witter revealed approximately UKP485,000
in cash and UKP129,000 in cheques were paid into their account between
January 2000 and December 2002.
