UK: Cannabis Alliance is Fighting for Seats

Norwich Advertiser

Friday 30 Apr 2004

---

THE LEGALISE Cannabis Alliance is taking on Councillors in all 13 wards in
Norwich in June's elections.

The party, a registered political party since 1999, is also planning to
contest the European Elections in the region, challenging seats in Norfolk,
Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire, Huntingdon and Lincolnshire.

The Party has fought for seats before in both local and parliamentary
elections, but this is the first time so many have come forward to stand in
Norwich.

Alun Buffry, candidate for the University ward and national co-ordinator
for the Party, said: "As one would expect, a common theme amongst
candidates is the legalisation of cannabis and its potential use as a local
cash crop for produce pollen-free (sic) fuels for local buses.

"All the candidates are very concerned about the environment and the future
of our world, as well as Human rights and the medical issues surrounding
cannabis.

"Norwich is an "all-up" council election this year on June 10. That means
every voter will get to choose up to three candidates", he added.

Candidates for the Legalise Cannabis Party include a hospital worker, a
college technician and a lecturer.

Norfolk Police have re-issued guidelines on the reclassification of
cannabis from Class B to Class C, claiming that whilst cannabis is till
illegal, it is up to the discretion of the officer whether arrests are made.

"While cannabis could potentially prove harmful to an individual's health,
it is not considered to cause damage to society on the same scale as
heroin, cocaine and crack cocaine," said Chief Constable Andy Hayman. "But
despite reclassification, cannabis will continue to be an arrestable offence.
