UK: Cannabis grown in cupboard
Staff Reporter News & Star, Cumbria
Thursday 05 Aug 2004 A MAN was caught growing cannabis plants in a cupboard when police raided his home in Penrith, Carlisle Crown Court heard. Andrew Mark Harrison, of Pategill Park, had one plant growing in a pot in his bedroom and three more thriving under an elaborate heat and light system in a cupboard. 'It was apparent to the officers that the cannabis plants were being nurtured and cared for, and indeed cultivated,' prosecuting counsel Jeremy Grout-Smith told the court. The police calculated that Harrison had 10 ounces of herbal cannabis as well as 295 grams of cannabis resin, which he had bought, Mr Grout-Smith said. Harrison pleaded guilty to possessing both forms of the drug, but was found not guilty by a jury of possessing the cannabis resin with intent to supply it. During the trial he told the court he had a heavy cannabis habit, which saw him using about 9oz of cannabis in a single week. So although a large amount of the drug had been found in his home it was all for his own use. Judge Paul Batty QC remanded Harrison on bail while he was assessed to see if he would be suitable for a drug treatment and testing order - a non-custodial sentence which gives drug users a chance to overcome their habit. Harrison, who has 16 previous convictions for drugs offences, will be sentenced on September 9.
