UK: Festival police make drug cocktail seizure
Harri Aston The Sentinel
Saturday 21 Aug 2004 Police seized a cocktail of drugs including heroin and cocaine from concert-goers attending this weekend's V2004 music festival - before the annual event had even started. Almost 500 grams of cannabis, 2.3 grams of cocaine, 1.4 grams of heroin, 198 ecstasy tablets and 8.6 grams of amphetamine were taken from people as they arrived for the Weston Park festival last night. Thirteen people have been arrested in connection with the haul and questioned by police. The drugs were found as officers carried out 71 searches ahead of the two-day festival. Of the 13 people arrested, two of them are also being quizzed in connection with the theft of drugs. A spokesman for Staffordshire Police said: "As people started arriving there were a total of 13 arrests and we have carried out 71 searches. "We have got one person due to appear at court on August 27 and the others are being processed or cautioned. There are no significant incidents or any exclusion orders as we stand." More than 100 officers are on duty at V2004 using digital CCTV technology for the first time to ensure the concert stays as drugs free as possible. The technology means car number plates can be checked against police records for drug users and dealers as soon as vehicles arrive at Weston Park. Details and pictures of suspects will then be passed back to the officers' mobile phones for them to make arrests. V2004 is expected to attract nearly 70,000 music fans to see acts including Muse and Dido. A fully-equipped drugs laboratory will also be on site as police plan to use sniffer dogs and forensic technology to find drugs. In addition to the new technology, about 36,000 black rubbish bags have been printed with the Crimestoppers Safe and Sound logo and phone number to encourage concert-goers to blow the whistle on thieves and drug-takers.
